In this digital age, high speed internet isn’t just a must-have item for businesses. Many average citizens do a lot of their shopping online, and digital communications have largely replaced such everyday tasks as receiving and paying bills, and the sort of correspondence that used to be done by writing a letter, putting a stamp on an envelope, mailing it and waiting a week for a response. There are many options for internet access in Torrance County, but what specific options are available and at what cost varies with location. Cable and fiber-optic options are available in a tiny percentage of the county, and are prohibitively expensive for most residents. Point-to-point relays provide access in a larger area, but are still out of reach, financially, for many. Satellite access is available virtually everywhere, but still isn’t affordable for some people, isn’t reliable in bad weather and to call it “high-speed” is a bit of a stretch.
A few years back, a company was working with one of Torrance County’s commissioners on a plan to provide higher speeds, at a much lower cost, to virtually every corner of the county. Unfortunately, the idea got “tabled” by the other two commissioners and the plan died a bureaucratic death. A good plan for affordable high-speed Internet access is essential for small businesses to grow, for students to learn and to generally make Torrance County a more attractive place to live and prosper.
