Roads in Torrance County SUCK! To be fair, it’s not just the roads that the county is responsible for. State roads, municipal roads and private roads are also often in very bad shape, but there’s not much that the county can do about the roads that it’s not directly responsible for, although pressure can be put on other levels of government to take better care of their own roads and streets. But, as a County Commissioner in Torrance County, one of Bill’s biggest focuses will be on improving the condition of our county roads.

We have both paved roads and unpaved dirt roads. Our paved roads, in many cases, are riddled with potholes. Many have been patched and repatched, and now the patches are falling out. Some are in such poor shape that they really can’t be effectively repaired, and need to be completely repaved. Of course, repaving costs more money than simply repatching the deteriorating patches, but replacing blown out tires and broken axles costs money as well. And bad roads have a negative and costly impact on economic development, as well.

There are two problems with unpaved dirt roads. First, they need to be properly maintained, with periodic regrading, and that regrading needs to be done in a manner that allows monsoon rain water to rapidly flow off the road surface lest it becomes nothing more than a long mud hole. If they’re not regraded as needed, they tend to develop a “washboard” effect which destroys the tires and suspensions of our vehicles. The second problem with dirt roads is that they tend to produce a lot of dust as vehicles drive over them. Dust can be kept down by dampening the dirt with water or oil, but Torrance County can’t spare the water (which is very temporary) and most oils are a disaster for the environment. But vegetable oils, such as the ones discarded by restaurants after using them to cook foods, won’t damage our precious environment at all.

Solving our road problems will take money, but raising taxes to pay for better roads isn’t a popular solution. However, as your County Commissioner Bill will explore sources of grant money, including funding that has previously been turned down by the current County Commissioners because of the political affiliation of the person offering the grant. Fixing Torrance County’s problems should always take precedence over politics.

Let’s be honest about this.
