Government’s primary reason for existence is to provide a variety of services to citizens, including emergency medical services, schools, fire protection, law enforcement and other additional services.
County services that we have in Torrance County include support for a Meals-on-Wheels program for shut-ins, particularly for the elderly, but with only one driver for Meals-on-Wheels, when that driver is sick or goes on vacation there is no backup driver, so during those times our neighbors just go without help. Training a backup driver could go a long way toward keeping that at-risk segment of our population from going hungry.
There are many other services that many counties provide through grants and partnering with various governmental and private agencies. While the county can’t do everything for everyone, some things like community health services, help for homeless veterans, drug addiction recovery programs, and much more could be made possible.
